Advancing Active Transportation Across Idaho

Idaho Walk Bike Alliance is your advocate for safe pathways and crossings from city hall to the statehouse. We partner with you and the leaders in your community to make human powered transportation safe, reliable, and accessible.

We work with you to educate local leaders about the options available to provide safe crossings, sidewalks, bike lanes, and infrastructure that supports active transportation. We advocate for grant funding to build infrastructure where needed and provide technical assistance where possible to create effective grant applications.

Our work has created a safer Idaho. In Clark Fork, students were having to travel down a state highway to get to school, including one in a wheelchair. Our advocacy for Child Pedestrian Safety grants made all the difference to build the first sidewalk in this small town so kids could get to school safely.

During the Idaho legislative session, Idaho Walk Bike Alliance educates lawmakers on the importance of active transportation. That work has led to funding for infrastructure projects across the state that make our cities and towns safer. Ponderay, for example, used funding from the Child Pedestrian Safety Grant in 2022 to transform a critical area in the town, including an upgrade to the Popsicle Bridge with a new support beam and sturdy handrails.

Idaho Walk Bike Alliance is your voice and ally. If you want safer pathways and crossings in your community and need our help, please call us at208-870-1633 or email us at info@idahowalkbike.org.

Child Pedestrian Safety Grant

A recent project funded by the Child Pedestrian Grant has significantly improved the safety, usability and accessibility of the iconic Popsicle Bridge in the small north Idaho town, Ponderay. The Popsicle Bridge is a vital walk/bike connection between the town of Sandpoint and Ponderay.

Prior to the upgrades, the bridge’s lack of permanent side railings posed a significant risk to pedestrians and cyclists, especially to children who sometimes removed the railing to jump into the water below. The new safety measures have not only eliminated this hazard but have also encouraged increased use of the bridge.

The tremendous success of this project illustrates the positive impact that targeted infrastructure improvements can have on a community. By prioritizing safety and accessibility, Ponderay has ensured that the Popsicle Bridge remains a cherished and essential part of the region’s cycling and walking landscape.

The Idaho Walk Bike Alliance is committed to helping communities throughout Idaho improve safety for their children. Our organization conceived of the Child Pedestrian Safety Grants and worked for its funding. The success of the Popsicle Bridge upgrades is a testament to the IWBA’s efforts and the positive impact that can be achieved when communities prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety.
