When we think of Idaho, we dream of a place where everyone has access to safe and reliable human-powered transportation.
Walk, bike, or roll, Idahoans deserve communities where traveling under your own power is supported and encouraged. That means good sidewalks, bike lanes, safe crossings, and pathways that work for all people.
The Idaho Walk Bike Alliance is your partner and ally to create that in Idaho. We empower Human-Powered transportation by:
- Advocating for access to trails and pathways, policy and funding from local, state, and federal lawmakers.
- Educating Idahoans of all ages about how to safely enjoy and promote safe transportation.
- Celebrating the benefits and the joy of Human-Powered transportation

Our History
Beginning in 2009
On April 23, 2009, a group of people convened at Boise State University for Idaho’s first ever “Statewide Conference on Active Transportation.” Participants came from all corners of Idaho and they agreed a statewide organization would provide the best advocacy for walking and biking in Idaho.
By October of 2009, seven founding members had created the Idaho Pedestrian and Bicycle Alliance.
Representing You
The seven founders met monthly, wrote bylaws, set up a membership structure, and began recruiting members. They were awarded some grant funding, along with additional support and donations and were soon able to hire a paid staff.
In March 2014, the board changed its name to Idaho Walk Bike Alliance.
Growing Our Presence
We began building a history of successful influence with decision makers in the world of transportation. Since our founding we have secured over 24 million dollars for Idaho’s Child Pedestrian Safety grants, which have resulted in safer communities throughout the state.
We also led a successful campaign to bring the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) grants back to Idaho. Because of our work more than $50 million in grant funding has supported walking and biking projects throughout the state.
Moving Forward
Idaho Walk Bike Alliance will continue to Educate, Advocate and Celebrate Human-Powered Transportation in Idaho. We are hosting Safe Routes to Schools Programs and other FUN Human-Powered Transportation events in Rural Communities across Idaho.
We have also introduced our new SIGNATURE one-of-a-Kind Human-Powered Rodeo events that feature activities commonly performed on horseback at actual rodeos and that are familiar to Rural Communities. Kids are invited to walk bike and roll through our 4 FUN Human-Powered Rodeo events of Keyhole, Pole Bending, Barrel Racing and Flag Race – as they develop skills, confidence and safety tips.
We are hosting Human-Powered Rodeo activities at schools, libraries, county fairs, 4H events. Girl Scouts activities and other community events across Idaho.
We have also developed one of the most comprehensive Online Safety Resources Libraries in the state of Idaho and perhaps the largest online Safety Resource Library in the Inter-mountain West.
