1969: Almost half of students walked or biked to school
2009: 13% of students walked or biked to school
Where has that burden shifted? To parents.
Morning congestion is increased 10-14% by parents driving kids to school.
25% of Idaho’s kids live in single-parent homes, increasing the burden on parents.
From 2011-2015, 831 children involved in bicycle and pedestrian crashes.
10 children were killed

These health trends must be reversed—or we risk this generation of kids being less healthy and having shorter lives than their parents.
Idaho Walk Bike Alliance and the American Heart Association are partnered with stakeholders across the state to create dedicated funding for the Idaho Safe Routes to School program. This national program has provided critical help for infrastructure and educational programs that encourage walking and biking to school.
The Safe Routes to School – Healthy Kids Campaign is a statewide effort to make Idaho safer for kids to walk and bike to school and to create healthy habits that will have a generational impact.
With dedicated state funding we can:
-
Make it easier for rural and low-income communities to benefit
-
Make it easier to plan by providing reliable resources
