The Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) will hold a series of workshops in October to provide updates on grant opportunities for projects addressing children pedestrian safety. Applications are due December 21.

Kids walk to school in Pocatello with their dog Bear on a road with no sidewalks and a blind curve.
During the 2017 Legislative Session, a companion bill to major transportation legislation established a funding mechanism for children pedestrian safety projects on the state and local system. The Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) and the Idaho Transportation Department developed a joint program to fund these projects. Program guidance can be found here and information and links to the application here. Applications are due electronically by December 21 at 4:30 p.m. MST.
The Children Pedestrian Safety Program projects should be “bid ready” within 90 days of award and also “shovel ready” so construction can be completed by late fall or early winter 2018. The projects must be considered maintenance, which includes:
- paths / sidewalks along or adjacent to an existing roadway
- connecting sidewalks / paths between two terminal points
- ADA ramps
- pedestrian crossing facilities across an existing roadway including signing and/or signalization
- paving an existing pathway
